AFTER HENDRICK VAN BALEN (FLEMISH 1575-1632) Noli Me Tangere, Touch me not Latin title, the phrase spoken according to St. John (20:14-18) by the risen Christ to Mary Magdelene. Depicted here, Mary kneels at the foot of Jesus on a garden path beside a wheelbarrow of cabbages, Christ holding a spade, Mary had mistaken him for the gardener. A tree lined path with rabbits and birds leads to the tomb. Jerusalem is glimpsed in the far distance,. Oil painting on metal, 38cm x 50cm, in ornate gilt frame, to the reverse a hand written label and a Phillips auctioneers label with the written code KR765. This painting is very similar to one by Jan Brueghel the younger (1601-1678) it is believed that Brueghel and Van Balen collaborated on works
